Hueston Woods Bridge Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Preble County, OH — Hueston Woods Lodge and Conference Center, the Board of Preble County Commissioners and R. Kyle Cross, Preble County Engineer are proud to announce the date and time of a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the 8th covered bridge in Preble County known at the Hueston Woods Bridge. The celebration has been slated for Sunday, June 24th beginning at 2:00 P.M. This historic opening of the gleaming, new structure is located on Camden College Corner Road in Israel Township, Preble County, Ohio within the western boundary of Hueston Woods State Park.
For Preble County, this milestone is more than just a big day, it is a time when we can reflect of the virtues and rewards of teamwork.
Decades of use and exposure to the elements took a toll on the original structure which crossed Four Mile Creek. In 2007, the prior Preble County Engineer, J. Stephen Simmons was instrumental in receiving funding for the Hueston Woods Bridge from the Ohio Department of Transportation. All involved in this bridge project took into consideration the aesthetics that Hueston Woods State Park exemplified which made the setting of this covered bridge over Four Mile Creek the perfect location for the eighth Preble County covered bridge.
In September 2011, Brumbaugh Construction of Arcanum, Ohio was given the task to construct the bridge over Four Mile Creek for a total cost of $1,795,444. The Hueston Woods Bridge is of Burr Arch Truss constuction and has a 109' span over the Four Mile Creek. The footers and abutments are comprised of 500 cubic yards of concrete and 40,000 lbs. of steel reinforcement. The timber structure is constructed with 104,100 board feet of lumber. This structure will support 40 ton truck and trailer traffic and has a life expectancy of over 100 years. The engineering and structural design was provided by Palmer Engineering in collaboration with Smolen Engineering who specializes in covered bridge design.
The cost to engineer, design and construct the Hueston Woods Covered Bridge was $1, 997,5000. Included in the total amount is Preble County's share of $266,083.20.
J. Stephen Simmons will be the Master of Ceremony at this celebration. This dedication will be a once-in-a-lifetime event. We invite everyone to take the opportunity to experience this grand celebration. Dignitaries from Preble County and around the State of Ohio will be present to join in the celebration as we have a balloon launch, bridge parade, homemade ice creams and other festivities.
We hope you can join us for this special event!
